The Brick Eaters

During our project visits to St. Louis, we observed a large number of vacant buildings that were abandoned, forgotten, or simply left idle by their owners. These structures were subsequently deconstructed for materials by an unofficial, underground workforce. The Brick Eaters, as they are referred to locally, are a small population who scavenge such sites late at night wielding sledgehammers and crowbars, bailing large volumes of brick that is then sold in unregulated markets.

In this context, it seems appropriate our collaboration with Theaster Gates was part of programming related to the Pulitzer Museum's Gordon Matta-Clark Exhibit.
